Book Review – Now is Not the Time to Panic

Now is Not the Time to Panic by Kevin Wilson

Ok, it might be a little strange that I’m doing book reviews on my art page. But writing is an art so reading is taking in art. Also it’s up to the reader to fill in a lot of the missing pieces the author leaves out. I guarantee the images in my head will be different than the ones floating around in yours. And that my friends is art!

Ok on to the book review, which coincidentally is about a writer and an artist. It’s written 1st person past tense, the story being told by the adult version of a 16 year old girl. So the fact that I, being a gray haired curmudgeon who finds himself despising most teen-agers all of a sudden, was able to connect with the main character is pretty amazing. This Kevin Wilson guy can write anything!

So back to the story… These two kids collaborate in the creation of an unsigned art poster and hang photocopies around in their town. People start talking and become fixated on figuring out what hell is going on. Pretty soon the poster spreads far beyond the town and the rumors won’t stop – is it satanic, is it kidnappers, why does this poster keep cropping up everywhere?

This book has cracked my top 10 all time favorites. The author’s subtle sense of humor and ability to write something interesting on every page made this a real page turner. It had me staying up way too late since the story rarely offered a stopping point.
I choose my fiction like I do my friends – kinda weird, but not going over the top trying to be so. This book nailed that.
